BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, September 25, 2009 –
United States bounced back from losing the first
set and defeated resilient Canada 17-25, 25-10,
25-23, 25-21 advancing to a semi final match
against Dominican Republic at the NORCECA
Women’s Continental Championship. The match
lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes.
American Jordan Larson had 15 points, including
three blocks and one ace, while Nicole Fawcett
also had 15 tallies all but one via attacks.
Cynthia Barboza contributed 13 and Heather Bown
and Christa Harmotto each compiled 8 points,
with Bown recording three blocks.
Tammy Mahon was the best Canadian scorer with 15
points and Brittney Page and Tiffany Dodds
charted 14 and 11 respectively. Nadine Alphonse
and Marissa Field scored 9 points apiece with
Alphonse totaling 5 blocks.
“I am very happy with the victory,” said Nancy
Metcalf of USA. “They (Canada) played well but
we made the adjustments after the first set. I
am content by reaching the semi finals and we
will be ready for tomorrow’s match”.
“It was a very tough match and Canada presented
different challenges,” said Hugh McCutcheon. “We
are going against Dominican Republic in the semi
finals. We have played several times this year
and we know each other. We are going to battle
hard and hope for the victory.”
“It was a very intense match but we couldn’t
execute in the final moments of the third and
fourth sets,” said Tammy Mahon, the captain of
Canada. “Congratulations to USA.”
“They played well after losing the first set,”
said Arnd Ludwig, the coach of Canada. “My team
has been improving with every match and our goal
now is to win the next two matches and finish in
the fifth position.”
